The British Council Reading Challenge is back! Reading for pleasure and empowerment not only makes us more aware and informed, but also helps expand our imagination, making us more empathetic and understanding of other people and cultures. It supports our health and well-being, enhances our ability to learn new skills, and helps us communicate our ideas more effectively. Most importantly, reading brings joy!
What’s the challenge, and how does it work?
The theme of this year’s challenge, Marvellous Makers, is all about creativity. From dance to drawing, junk modelling to music, there's something for everyone! Each child who joins the challenge must read six books over six weeks and submit at least two book reviews of their favourite reads. Children will also participate at a workshop which would support their book review writing. Upon successfully completing the challenge, participants will receive a certificate.
- The essence of the challenge is ‘read a book in a week’.
- The books are divided into two categories – younger and older from books that will be displayed in the library. The younger collection is suitable for children in the age group of 5 to 8 years and the older collection for 9 to 15 years.
- Children will be allowed to borrow only one book at a time. They can choose the books they want to read from a wide range of books on the theme.
- One engagement session will be provided as a premium addition to the Reading Challenge programme.
Important dates:
- Last date to register for the challenge is Tuesday 03 December 2024.
- Challenge duration is from Tuesday 10 December 2024 with an orientation session to Friday 31 January 2025.

Non-members register at LKR 4,000
*The registration will be towards Reading Challenge Membership which will enable event participation.
