About this course

IELTS Coach is a British Council course aimed to prepare learners taking either the IELTS Academic or General Training test. IELTS Coach will help you in IELTS strategies such as time management, analysing questions, identifying keywords and issues, and scanning skills. 

Who is this course for?

IELTS Coach is for students looking to improve their exam performance for either the IELTS Academic or General Training test. It is suitable for students of any level from pre-intermediate (A2) to Advanced (C1).

What does the course cover?

You will learn how to develop effective test strategies and practise doing sample IELTS tasks. You will also receive personalised feedback throughout the course from one of our qualified instructors on how to boost your IELTS performance.

IELTS Coach course overview for each skill


  • Full practise with question types for Sections 1 to 4
  • Form completion, sentence completion, summary completion, flowchart completion,
  • Short answer, and multiple-choice questions
  • The language covered includes compound nouns, words with similar sounds, vocabulary for education, and linking expressions
  • Following signposting words and understanding stress and intonation 


  • A range of texts and question types such as flowchart completion, multiple-choice, true/false/not given, heading matching, sentence completion, summary completion, and categorisation
  • Language areas include language for science, numerical terminology, words with similar meaning, and compound words
  • Skimming for specific detail, scanning for general understanding, dealing with unfamiliar words, following referencing, paraphrasing the main ideas, recognising text types, writer’s views, claims and opinions. 


  • Full practice for Tasks 1 and 2 for both Academic and General Training 
  • Sub-skills include writing introductions and overviews, categorising data, following instructions, brainstorming and planning, and structuring paragraphs
  • Analysing the different types of tasks in writing task 2 – understanding the topic, presenting and organising your ideas, making the main argument clear, using linking words and expressions, building complex sentences, writing concessions and refuting arguments 


  • Introduction to assessment criteria for the speaking test 
  • Complete summary of speaking strategies and approaches
  • Expanding your answers for speaking part 1
  • Using vocabulary to link and expand ideas
  • Brainstorming and using your notes to prepare your talk for speaking part 2

  • Exploring the theme, making your ideas clear, speculating and offering alternative points of view in speaking part 3
