Reading is more than a habit; it’s a gateway to imagination, knowledge, and connection.
As part of the UK National Year of Reading 2026, a celebration of the power of reading to transform lives and communities, the British Council Libraries invite you to join the Reading Ambassador Programme 2026, an exciting opportunity for young readers to lead, inspire, and build a community of readers. Through this initiative, you will help drive a global movement that encourages people to discover the joy of reading and embrace lifelong learning.
What is the programme?
We are looking for passionate young readers to become Reading Ambassadors.
As an ambassador, you will:
• Design and co-lead reading activities
• Promote reading within your school, college, or community
• Represent the British Council Libraries in your network
Activities may include:
• Hosting book discussions
• Leading storytelling sessions
• Running reading campaigns
• Organising community outreach initiatives
Why participate?
By joining, you will:
• Develop leadership and communication skills
• Gain hands-on experience in programme facilitation
• Build connections with like-minded peers
• Represent the British Council as a Reading Ambassador
Recognition and rewards:
• Ambassador of the Year: Free one-year library membership or extension
• All ambassadors: Quarterly library membership or extension to a quarter
All ambassadors will receive Certificate signed by the Country Director
Who can apply?
• Library members aged 14–28 years (members aged 14 to 17 are supposed to get consent of Parent/Guardian)
• Students from schools, colleges, and universities
• Individuals passionate about reading and community engagement
Important dates:
• Application deadline: 25 May 2026
• Interviews: End of May 2026/Start of June
• Programme begins: June 2026
• Programme concludes: December 2026
