I'm a mother, theatre director, drama teacher, radio host and dabble in writing fiction and non-fiction. I'm the Vice Principal of The Wendy Whatmore Academy of Speech and Drama (WWA) and the Artistic Director of MInd Adventures Theatre Company. My role at the WWA allows me to work with children of all ages, while my work as a theatre practitioner of MInd Adventures, and as a radio host have always focused on social and political issues relevant to Sri Lanka.
On 21 May 2016, Jayanthi Kuru-Utumpala became the first Sri Lankan (male or female) to reach the summit of Mount Everest. In recognition of this accomplishment, and her professional career as a feminist and women’s rights activist over the past 14 years, Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Women’s Affairs appointed her their first-ever Goodwill Ambassador for Women’s Rights.
Sunela Jayewardene is an Environmental Designer whose focus is on Leisure and Conservation Architecture. She is well known both for her loyalty to vernacular architectural and historical traditions, in addition to a serious concern for ecology and environment. Time Magazine International describes her as, ‘Sri Lanka’s leading Environmental Architect’.
Shalini Wickramasuriya is an educational consultant specialising in project and programme planning, education curriculum design, teacher-training and bespoke learning programmes. She is a Master trainer for the teacher trainer Diploma Programme CIE Board in Sri Lanka and the founder of 'The Music Project'.
