Having trained as a Mechanical Engineer, Alifiya has a diverse background in product development, product design and innovation as well as art festival production. As a fellow of the Do School, Germany, an entrepreneurship incubator for ethical businesses, she consulted H&M Germany on the future of work.

She is a former Director, Customer Service and Management Committee member of Unilever Sri Lanka LTD. During her 19 years with Unilever, locally and overseas, she has worked in Supply Chain, R&D and Quality Assurance prior to her early retirement to start a consulting and lecturing career.
