Bullying among school children is a prevalent issue, and between the ages of 11-13, children begin to practise hierarchies and discrimination amongst themselves. In Sri Lanka it is found that often such bullying has a gendered dimension to it, causing children who do not conform to these pre-conceived ideals to be alienated. The session will use role-playing and an engaged discussion to help children to begin challenging their thinking around this, asking them to consider ‘norms’ and the language (e.g. freak, weirdo, ponnaya) that they use.
